Hunters Branch Cleanup
Saturday, April 5 and 12, 2008

The Stonehurst Homeowners Association (SHA) volunteers on 5 and 12 April 2008, completed a cleanup of the Hunters Branch section north of Rte 50 just west of Nutley Street. Their effort was part of the annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup that is sponsored by the Alice Ferguson Foundation, which provided supplies and support for the cleanup.

On Saturday, April 5, a group of Stonehurst residents worked on cleaning up Hunter's Branch, which runs parallel to lindenwood and bailey's lanes. This effort was part of the Potomac Watershed Cleanup effort which is sponsored by the Alice B Ferguson Foundation (www.PotomacCleanup.org). The group collected 35 bags of trash, mostly plastic bottles and styrofoam. They also collected a large amount of tile (that was left over from someone's kitchen remodeling), a tire, a bicycle, a wagon and assorted other debris. This was the third year the group cleaned up the stream. The Stonehurst participants were : Eleanor Hahn, chris Daubert, Roger Ruppo, Pam and Tom Miller, Susan D'Alonzo, Joan Quill, Tom Easton, Eric Flemmin, Sue Lapins and Jack Buckley. Also helping was Charlie Balch from Vienna. Another cleanup was completed on 12 April with another pile of bags -- good work!

Note that the stream is much cleaner thanks to SHA and other group efforts, which influenced VA Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to expand in 2008 the Delayed Harvest Trout Waters and trout stocking in Accotink Creek; now 3.1 miles from King Arthur Road downstream to Braddock Road.

Keep up the good work in helping all the Friends of Accotink Creek restore the watershed to a more pritine place for all to enjoy!
