Accotink Creek Storm Drain Marking Projects

Why are we establishing several Storm Drain Marking projects along Accotink Creek?

The real problem in the Accotink Watershed and most urban watersheds is impervious surfaces, curb and gutter storm water control, and uncontrolled outfall.

What goes in here .......................................... comes out here!
More information on the problem: www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/stormwater

Pre-printed blue and green markers with the no dumping message in English and Spanish will be available by February to label storm drains that lead to Accotink Creek. No painting is necessary for these projects! All other project guidelines are the same as for stenciling. Project Guidelines: www.fairfaxcounty.gov/nvswcd/stenciling.htm

For more information E-mail the stenciling coordinator or call 703-324-1423, TTY 711, or download a publicity flier (pdf).

First-graders to fifth-graders helped to contribute to the final Fairfax City storm drain markers that can now be seen all across the city, alerting everyone that what goes into the drain empties into Accotink Creek.www.fairfaxva.gov/Environment/Students_Community.asp

Penalties for dumping of hazardous materials such as paint in storm drains:

At a minimum in Fairfax County, dumping would be considered a Class I misdemeanor punishable by a minimum fine of $2500 and 1 year in jail. Typically 3 charges are levied, 1 for not notifying Fire and Rescue of an unlawful release, 1 for dumping, 1 for not cleaning it up. The perpetuator is also responsible for paying for the Fire and Rescue Department's response and clean-up costs.

Information for Storm Drain Marking planning committee:

Two groups have expressed an interest in working in Cardinal Forest; an Eagle Scout candidate who will be working along Carrleigh Parkway and a school community service club.

A volunteer team of 2-3 people typically applies 6-8 markers/hour.

Any communities/storm drains outside Home Owner Association (HOA) boundaries are not under the jurisdiction of an HOA and don't need HOA approval for projects. We need a VDOT permit for any storm drains to be marked in non-HOA areas including storm drains along the main road into Lake Accotink Park.
