Winter salt hurts aquatic life!
Virginia water quality standards include an acute maximum chloride concentration criterion of 860 mg/l and a chronic maximum concentration criterion of 230 mg/l to protect aquatic life. The acute criterion is for a one-hour average not to be exceeded more than once every three years; the chronic criterion applies to a four-day average, which is also not to be exceeded more than once every three years.
