Oil Spill 2024

January 25, 2024:
Fairfax City Fire Marshall officers reported detecting an oil spill contaminating Accotink Creek. The quantity was not reported, but apparently was fairly small, given the conditions we observed on the creek the next day.

Before reaching open water, the oil had to travel .6 miles in the darkness of storm sewers that have entombed the North Fork of Accotink Creek in recent years. This oil spill is just one of a series of calamities that have befallen the North Fork, among them:

What next for Accotink Creek - a meteor strike?

Oil sheen flowing past Eaton Place the next day

Contamination boom blocks further movement of the spill. We hope.
