2020 Potomac Watershed Cleanup
Accotink Creek Watershed
April and May

★ Due to covid19, the Board of Conservators of Friends of Accotink Creek has decided not to hold our usual spring stream cleanups, part of the annual Potomac Watershed Cleanup. ★

But you can still GET YOUR BRAIN WET! We encourage everyone to "Pick a spot" for independent cleanup work this spring, then share what they have done on the Watch the Green Grow webpage and the Friends of Accotink Creek Facebook

Three million tons of trash - what the Alice Ferguson Foundation has removed during annual Potomac Watershed Cleanups since 1989. We can't rest now - the litterbugs never rest!

Want to stop litter before it starts? A plastic bag may endure for centuries, but anti-plastic bag legislation has a typical lifespan of mere hours in the Virginia General Assembly. Read of the short, brave life of this year's bills, then contact your Virginia legislators to support putting a tax on disposable shopping bags. This makes the eighth year running similar bills have been tabled in committee without action, but let your legislators know anyway!

See how others contributed to last year's cleanup.

♫ Learn the cleanup anthem! ♫

H2O!
Oh no, you didn't
Throw that on the ground!
Oh no, you didn't
Leave your trash around!
I know you didn't
Dirty up the street!
So check yourself and listen to our beat.
Beer bottles, gum wrappers, soda, old shoes,
Leaving things around makes you all fools!
Litter adds up piece by piece.
It's up to us to give Potomac some relief!
It's up to us to give Potomac some relief!

When you live underwater, no one can hear you SCREAM!
We must listen for those screams from the water and repeat them LOUDLY!
