Damselfly Larvae in Abundance

Damselflies are not rare along Accotink Creek and its tributaries, but it is quite unusual to see the dozens of larvae in pool after pool that were spotted in an unnamed tributary that flows across Southampton Drive in the Kings Park neighborhood of Springfield before it enters Lake Accotink Park. The larvae are large, in the neighborhood of two inches in length, but determining which species is a mystery yet to be solved. Damselfly larvae are tolerant of impaired water quality. - July 23, 2014
