2019 Americana Drive Cleanup
Veterans Day, November 11

Thank you, volunteers of The Vistas!

Friends of Accotink Creek members supported and participated in a community cleanup along Americana Drive. This cleanup was planned and led by the Fairfax County Restoration Project, with great support from both the community and County partners. FACC was delighted to support this project.

We enjoyed great weather for the cleanup. with clear skies and highs in the 60's, as good as one might hope for in November. Another wonder of the heavens accompanied our cleanup, as an uncommon Transit of Mercury across the face of the sun was in progress overhead. Sadly, the filtered binoculars we had on hand were inadequate for spotting the tiny dot of the planet.

An amusing find among the trash was an uopened can of Washington Nationals beer, apparently sitting in the woods for years until it finally brought luck in the recent World Series.

FCRP did excellent work bringing in partners to support the project, and doing reaching out to the community for volunteers. We had 30+ participants, and in 2 hours, we collected an estimated 62 bags of trash, and nearly filled a dumpster provided by Fairfax County Public Works. This is far less than what was collected during our last cleanup on Presidents Day, a hopeful sign that the habit of littering and dumping here may be declining.

  • Friends of Accotink Creek - Adopt-a-Highway partner.
